Maplewood Township operates under the Township Committee form of government. The Township Committee of Maplewood meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month. It consists of five elected members for three-year terms. Each year, on January 1, the committee meets to elect one of the members to be the mayor for a year term. The mayor is considered to be the head of the municipal government and is responsible as Chair of the Township Committee with voice and vote. Maplewood citizens can become members of the Citizens' Boards and Commissions. Since the Township Committee is the legislative body of the municipality, it has the responsibility of passing the laws that effect the community.
